Library opens 24-7 from 3rd March to May 30th

From TODAY Monday 3rd March 2008 the Main Library (at Mile End) will be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week until Friday May 30th 2008, after which standard term-time hours will be resumed. There will be one break to this pattern over the 4 day Easter weekend [Friday March 21st to Monday March 24th], when the Main Library will close at midnight Thursday 20th March and re-open on Tuesday 25th March at 9am.

All users will need to show current and valid QMUL ID to gain access. More details are available from the Library web site.

Having listened to your feedback after the pilot of last year we have extended 24 hour opening to 7 days a week, and will be providing extra cleaning, putting more hours into re-shelving and installing vending machines in the Library foyer.

Your feedback (to j.m.hayles@qmul.ac.uk) on how things are going would be most welcome throughout the 13 week period.

E-books week taking place Monday 11th February through to Friday 15th February 2008

QM Library Services are highlighting e-books that have been purchased for student and staff use. We currently have e-books for Business and Management, Dentistry, Economics, Engineering, Geography, History, Medicine, Politics and Reference books such as dictionaries.

Look out for the posters and pick up book marks from the library counters. Contact your subject librarian for more information about books in your subject area.

New Intersite Return Service for One Week and Ordinary Loans

From Monday February 11th you can return any One Week or Ordinary Loan to any QMUL library, and it will be returned to the library which you borrowed it from. Loans returned in this way will be cleared from your record at the time when you hand them in, and any fines due may be paid at any library.

Please note that it will not always be possible to have loans reissued at other libraries after the maximum renewal limit has been reached, as a result of local differences in loan policies.

E-BOOK SURVEY - win amazon vouchers

Participate in the national ebook survey and enter a draw for Amazon vouchers!

JISC, the agency that oversees use of ICT to support education and research in UK academic community, is funding a major study into the use of e-books in UK universities. As part of that study, JISC has purchased 36 e-books in business and management, engineering, media studies and medicine which will be available until July 2009. Details of these e-books have been loaded into the Library catalogue and subject lists are also available. You will need to have an athens username and password to access them.

To benchmark user attitudes towards e-books, there is now a survey running to gather student and staff attitudes to this resource format. The survey is entirely web-based, confidential and quick to complete. If you want to be entered into the draw, you are asked to give your university email address at the end of the survey, but this will not be linked to your response.

EndNote Web and the Web of Knowledge upgrades on Sunday

Thomson Scientific will be upgrading EndNote Web and the Web of Knowledge on Sunday, February 3rd, 2008. The EndNote Web upgrade will commence at 12:00 a.m. EST. - 5.00 a.m. GMT. and Web of Knowledge at 9:00 a.m. EST. - 2.00 p.m. GMT. There will be brief disruptions to access on services throughout the day. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Level One Study Area partially unavailable for use on 10th, 11th and 12th Dec

Starting on Monday 10th at 2pm and continuing on through Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th December half of the Level One Study Area will be unavailable for use as normal. The West side of the area is being used for the collection of gowns and taking of photos for the College's Winter graduation ceremonies.

The East side of the area will be available for student use as normal from 8am to 8pm on both days, with around 90 seats and 27 workstations accessible. Access to this side of the area will be via the doors leading to the internal staircase between what was formerly Café Amici & Barclays Bank.

Apologies for the inevitable inconvenience this will cause to students.

Reading Week

For most non-medical departments, 5th - 9th November will be reading week. The Main Library and all Medical libraries will be open as normal.

There will be special arrangements for ONE WEEK LOANS borrowed from The Main Library during this period. One Week Loans borrowed on the previous Thursday or Friday (1st & 2nd November) will be extended to be due back on Monday 12th November. Ordinary Loans and Short Loans will remain as normal.
