Women at Queen Mary Online: A Virtual Exhibition

A new online exhibition which explores the significant role of
women in higher education through the decades is being
launched at Queen Mary, University of London.

Women at Queen Mary Online: A Virtual Exhibition,
celebrates the role that women have played throughout the
history of the four institutions which make up the College
today.The online exhibition includes several virtual tours and
is structured around a number of themes, including the four
colleges which underpin the College (Queen Mary and
Westfield Colleges, and St Barts and The London Schools of
Medicine and Dentistry); a history of QM women from 1850
until the present day; women of achievement and women´s
voices, including dramatised archival material and interviews.

The Virtual Exhibition includes material from last year´s
public exhibition and much more, including early photographs
of women students and teachers, alumnae memorabilia and
the stories of QM women from across disciplines throughout
the College´s history. The `Women´s Voices´ virtual tour
includes more than 60 audio clips which provide a fascinating
insight into the lives of women from different generations
and communities entering higher education for the first time
from the 1850s onwards.

The Women at Queen Mary public exhibition was on display at
the College from October to December 2007, and a
roundtable discussion of graduates from each decade since
the 1930s opened the exhibition on 4 October. Dr Colette
Bowe, Queen Mary alumna and Chairman of the College
Council, commented on the colossal change in the condition
of women that has taken place in the last century. Reflecting
on the roundtable event, Dr Bowe said: "one of the oldest
participants, who went to university in the 1930s, commented
that she was very lucky to go. That became a key point for
me. I was a student at Queen Mary in the 1960s and my
generation felt completely entitled to be at university. This
made me reflect on the gigantic social change that took place
in only 30 years."

A recording of the roundtable discussion, chaired by Professor
Lisa Jardine, is available on the Virtual Exhibition, as are
clips from interviews with Dr Bowe and others. The sound
clips include the voices of successful QM women from the
1930s until the present day, including Professor Maud
Godward, an avid motorcar driver who studied Botany at East
London College, just before it was renamed Queen Mary
College; Dr Dorothy Russell, the first woman to be appointed
Chair of Morbid Anatomy at The London Hospital Medical
College; Dr Elizabeth Blackwell, who trained at Barts in 1850
and was the first fully-qualified woman doctor of medicine;
and Principal Constance Maynard, the first head of Westfield
College who played a central role in the establishment of the
first residential women´s college in London.

Library opens 24-7 from 3rd March to May 30th

From TODAY Monday 3rd March 2008 the Main Library (at Mile End) will be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week until Friday May 30th 2008, after which standard term-time hours will be resumed. There will be one break to this pattern over the 4 day Easter weekend [Friday March 21st to Monday March 24th], when the Main Library will close at midnight Thursday 20th March and re-open on Tuesday 25th March at 9am.

All users will need to show current and valid QMUL ID to gain access. More details are available from the Library web site.

Having listened to your feedback after the pilot of last year we have extended 24 hour opening to 7 days a week, and will be providing extra cleaning, putting more hours into re-shelving and installing vending machines in the Library foyer.

Your feedback (to j.m.hayles@qmul.ac.uk) on how things are going would be most welcome throughout the 13 week period.

E-books week taking place Monday 11th February through to Friday 15th February 2008

QM Library Services are highlighting e-books that have been purchased for student and staff use. We currently have e-books for Business and Management, Dentistry, Economics, Engineering, Geography, History, Medicine, Politics and Reference books such as dictionaries.

Look out for the posters and pick up book marks from the library counters. Contact your subject librarian for more information about books in your subject area.

New Intersite Return Service for One Week and Ordinary Loans

From Monday February 11th you can return any One Week or Ordinary Loan to any QMUL library, and it will be returned to the library which you borrowed it from. Loans returned in this way will be cleared from your record at the time when you hand them in, and any fines due may be paid at any library.

Please note that it will not always be possible to have loans reissued at other libraries after the maximum renewal limit has been reached, as a result of local differences in loan policies.

E-BOOK SURVEY - win amazon vouchers

Participate in the national ebook survey and enter a draw for Amazon vouchers!

JISC, the agency that oversees use of ICT to support education and research in UK academic community, is funding a major study into the use of e-books in UK universities. As part of that study, JISC has purchased 36 e-books in business and management, engineering, media studies and medicine which will be available until July 2009. Details of these e-books have been loaded into the Library catalogue and subject lists are also available. You will need to have an athens username and password to access them.

To benchmark user attitudes towards e-books, there is now a survey running to gather student and staff attitudes to this resource format. The survey is entirely web-based, confidential and quick to complete. If you want to be entered into the draw, you are asked to give your university email address at the end of the survey, but this will not be linked to your response.
