Library system upgrade - Wednesday July 16th

The library system will be upgraded on Wednesday July 16th, and this will affect access both to the catalogue and to some lending services. We will do our utmost to resume normal service as quickly as possible, but you should assume unexpected breaks in service on this and the following day.

This upgrade gives us an opportunity to tidy up the catalogue and introduce a number of changes. These include:

(1) A clearer, less cluttered Search Page. All extraneous information has been moved to linked pages.

(2) Location and browse links added to single record location/availability displays (NB for Main Library only for the time being). Location will open library floor plan pop-ups which should aid users in locating material; while if all copies are on loan browse will display a shelflist of material at the same location as alternatives should all copies of a title be out on loan.

(3) "Try Also" MetaLib and SFX searches: this will carry over your search to MetaLib [Quick]Search or the SFX a/z ejournal titles list.

We apologize for any inconvenience the upgrade process may cause and will endeavour to keep downtime to a minimum.

New Archives Webpages

The Archives webpages have now been expanded to include guides, leaflets and collection descriptions. Information about how to order photocopies and scans of archival material is also available. Discover a treasure trove of previously unseen historic material: http://www.library.qmul.ac.uk/archive

From 11th June, Main Library Issue Counter will open at 10.30am each Wednesday

Starting next week, until the end of the vacation, the Main Library will be opening its doors as usual at 9.00am on Wednesday mornings, but the issue counter will open at 10:30am. This is to enable us to do some staff training.

Books can be borrowed using the self issue machine and books can be returned in the book drop during this time.

Your feed-back on problems you might encounter would be useful for future planning.

26th May - Spring Bank Holiday

The Main Library will remain open for QM users only throughout Bank Holiday Monday, but this will be for reference and self-service only. The Short Loan Collection will not be available. No visitors will be admitted on Bank Holiday Monday.

Whitechapel Library will be open with basic services between 9am and 5pm.

West Smithfield Library will be closed.

Medical and Dental Libraries Loan Period Survey

We want your opinions about the length of time you should be able to keep the books you borrow from the Medical and Dental Libraries, and about related issues like renewals, reservations and their effects on overall book availability. We also have a few changes in mind and value your views on those too.

The survey is not intended to influence policy about loan periods applied at the Main Library.

It is very short and will only take 5 minutes of your time.

Library services on bank holiday (5th May)

The Main Library and Whitechapel Library will be open throughout May Day Bank Holiday, with Counter services available from 9am-5pm.

QMUL users (staff, students, alumni & NHS) and University of London staff and students will be admitted with appropriate ID.

West Smithfield Library will not open on Bank Holiday (but will be open at other scheduled times during the weekend).

West Smithfield opening on Saturday afternoons

From Saturday 3rd May West Smithfield Library reading room will begin opening on Saturday afternoons, 2-7pm during Medical School term time. A basic counter service will be available. Basement group study and computer rooms will be open 24hrs as normal.
